Adult-education Tour Kicks off June 12 at Skyline Park in Denver, Colorado--Virginia College a Major Participant
Posted: Wednesday, June 10, 2009
A new national program to promote education for adults kicks off its national tour Friday at Skyline Park in Denver, Colorado. The "Career Stimulus Package Empowerment Tour," sponsored by Hoboken, N.J.-based elearners.com and supported by eight colleges--including Virginia College--takes place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. outdoors at the park, which is at 17th and Arapahoe Streets.
The program will offer under-educated, under-employed adults access to online education opportunities as well as job-shadowing programs at some of America's most innovative companies.
The event offers career coaching and the opportunity to apply for full-tuition college scholarships, with a total of up to $4 million to be awarded by eight schools: American Public University, Ashworth College, Bryant and Stratton College, Capella University, Ellis University, Everest University, Virginia College and Western Governors University. Virginia College is a "Gold" sponsor.
Those interested can sign up for career coaching either in advance at www.empowermenttour.com or by showing up early Friday. That web site also has details of the tour route and dates.
A press conference is scheduled for 10:30-11 a.m. Friday, with speakers including Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien, tour ambassador Flavia Colgan, and Alyssa Ohleyer, an online student from Colorado and winner of a "Project Working Mom" scholarship. Elearners.com, an online education resource, awarded 100 scholarships under Project Working Mom, which inspired the new tour. Virginia College awarded fifteen of those scholarships.
The event also will accept donations of business clothing that would be appropriate for interviews. Organizers also will distribute copies of the "Career Stimulus Times," filled with career advice. The 40-city tour ends Sept. 9 in Los Angeles.
