Education Corporation of America Kicks Off Go-Green Campaign
Posted: Tuesday, August 26, 2008
In an effort to get all employees excited about efforts to conserve energy and improve the environment, Education Corporation of America (ECA) recently kicked off its corporate Go-Green initiative with an employee luncheon. ECA is the parent company of Virginia College, Virginia College Online, Culinard, and Golf Academy of America. The program is starting with the corporate headquarters and will expand to all campuses, encouraging employees and students to be aware of some of the simple things they can do to save energy.
At the luncheon, Rita Chubick, Director of Marketing Analysis, welcomed the group and introduced ECA CEO Tom Moore. Moore emphasized the company's commitment to this program, noting that with the number of employees and students ECA has, even small acts of conservation can have a solid effect.
He then introduced the guest speaker, Stacey W. Little, Marketing Manager for Legacy, Partners in Environmental Education, a non-profit group dedicated to providing fact-based environmental educational materials to citizens in Alabama, where ECA is headquartered.
Little continued the theme of everyone taking small steps to conserve--such as turning off lights in an office when going to lunch or changing the thermostat at home by a degree or two--and how such actions can positively affect the use of energy. Simply turning off computers when out of the office for any longer periods of time--and especially overnight--can save thousands of kilowatt hours of electricity annually, he noted. And that not only helps the environment but also saves money.
Chubick pointed out that ECA corporate has taken such steps as no longer using Styrofoam cups in break rooms--everyone attending the luncheon received "go-green" coffee mugs to use instead--and no longer using individual plastic containers for creamer and sweetener. Just these small changes keep tons of waste out of landfills.
At the conclusion of the luncheon, on behalf of Moore and ECA, Jamey Lackey from the corporate marketing department presented Little and Legacy Incorporated with a donation of $1,000.
