Virginia College Computer Networking Students Use IT Skills to Reach Out to Community

Posted: Friday, April 23, 2010

Network Engineering students from Virginia College in Birmingham, Alabama, recently utilized their IT skills to help The Junior League of Birmingham in a community outreach project. This was the third consecutive year the students have assisted the group. The Junior League of Birmingham is a civic group committed to promoting voluntarism and improving communities through volunteers. Members of the Junior League dropped off donated computers for the Network Engineering students to work on. Students from various Networking classes utilized the skills they had learned in the classroom to repair and refurbish the computers.

Once the computers were repaired, they were donated back to the civic group to be sold at their annual Bargain Carousel event. Proceeds from The Bargain Carousel benefit approximately thirty two community projects for women and children.

Program Director Chris Humphrey said, "We were delighted that we were asked to participate in this great event again this year. This is our third year to work with the Junior League. This partnership gives our Networking students valuable real-world, hands-on experience and a great feeling of accomplishment for a worthy cause."

Virginia College in Birmingham offers skills training in a number of information technology disciplines including computer network engineering and network management.
