Stay-at-Home Moms Prepare for Entry Back into the Workforce
Posted: Tuesday, September 30, 2008
The rising gas and food prices and an overall unstable economy are forcing stay-at-home moms back into the professional workforce. Re-entry into the workforce after being a stay at home mom for years can be a daunting and overwhelming task. In a heated job market, ex stay at home moms are not only having to compete with recent college graduates but downsized professionals as well.
Stay at Home Moms are returning to college
According to a recent survey conducted by American InterContinental University, three quarters of stay at home moms want more education. More career opportunities, greater flexibility in job choices and the desire to increase their financial contribution to the household are among the top reasons moms want to return to college. It can be challenging for adult learners to get back into the college game but remember there are plenty of others doing the same thing. Refreshing or gaining new skills will make you that much more marketable in the work place.
The Transition Back to School can be Difficult
I don't think anyone would argue that going back to college as an adult can be a difficult transition. Not only do adult learners worry about fitting in with the younger generation but they need to focus on learning while dealing with mortgages and family. The important thing to know is that you're not alone. Over half of today's college students are "non-traditional learners" just like you. Below are a few tips to ensure your transition back into the college game is smooth.
- Get Your Head Into The Game -- consider taking a community education or adult enrichment course through your local school district. These courses are pretty inexpensive and last a few weeks. You won't earn college credit through enrichment courses but it will help you get back into the "student mode"
- Test The Waters -- Many colleges and online programs allow you to take an individual course without registering as a full-time student. This will give you the opportunity to get a feel for what it will be like before committing all the way.
- Try Online Classes -- If you feel intimidated or feel unsure about the traditional classroom environment, consider e-learning. Nowadays there are plenty of colleges that offer programs that can be completed 100% online.
- Prepare Your Family -- Whether online or on campus, life for all family members will change when you go to college. You will need your families help and support more then ever. Talk to your family about your goal, ways they can help support you, what their feelings are about your new journey.
