The newest campus of Virginia College has begun enrolling students in Columbia, South Carolina. The school expects to start classes on April 7, and will offer programs in career areas such as medical assisting, office management, medical office, medical billing and coding, and pharmacy technician.

Heading the new school is campus President Monica Sokoloff. She was formerly director of Strayer University campuses in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and brings to the new position over twenty years of experience in all phases of education.

"We are delighted with the response in Columbia," says Sokoloff. "As with all Virginia College locations, we gauge employer demand and then design and offer programs that meet those needs. The strong medical community here was a primary factor in our deciding to open a school here and in deciding which programs to offer."

The school will be located in the former Toys 'R' Us location on Two Notch Road near Columbia Mall but is currently operating out of temporary offices nearby while construction is being completed. Virginia College is investing between $4 million and $5 million in renovations, fixtures, and lab equipment. Initial enrollment will be about 200 students with eventual student population reaching about 1,000. The facility will employ about 65 people fulltime.

Virginia College also has schools in Greenville and Charleston as well as in eleven other cities around the southeast and has over 16,000 students around the world attending classes online. All schools are accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. The school's parent company, Education Corporation of America, is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.

Also part of the management team for the Columbia school are Kim King, Director of Admissions, who brings over five years of admissions experience with Virginia College's online division; Director of Financial Planning Curtis Carter, who previously worked in various financial aid positions at Virginia College locations in Birmingham and Biloxi, Mississippi; and Academic Dean Laura Butler, who was most recently associate dean at Virginia College in Birmingham.

The school's web site is and the telephone number is 803-509-7100. The campus address is 7201 Two Notch Road Suite 1000, Columbia, SC 29223.
