Country's Number Two Employment Sector? It's Food, Says Government Stats

Country's Number Two Employment Sector? It's Food, Says Government Stats

An article at MSNBC.com reports that the food industry is the second largest employer in the United States, second only to government employment in its varied forms. Chef Antony Osborne, Dean of Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College in Birmingham, Alabama, says he is not surprised.

"Our goal is to get at least three job offers for each of our graduates," says Osborne. "And we usually achieve that."

Osborne noted that demand from the food industry led the school to create its 36-week culinary arts and pastry arts programs. Employers made it clear what they wanted their employees to know and that is what Culinard teaches them.

Osborne also notes that his school is running at near capacity, partly because of the downturn in the economy.

"We have a number of students who are either laid off or downsized, or who are concerned about their future employment. They have always had a passion for cooking, so they decide the time is right for them to enter the culinary field."
