Is Online Learning for me?
If you’re interested in the idea of online learning, but you still aren't sure if online learning is the right solution for you, think about what it offers. You know it's convenient, you know it can offer a quality learning experience, and you know it provides flexibility to complete your coursework anytime, day or night. But you may wonder if you can really succeed without being in a traditional, face-to-face classroom setting. Here are a few points to consider as you determine whether an online degree is right for you.
Are you self-disciplined and motivated?
Unlike a traditional course where you see the students and instructors several times a week, an online college degree course is totally self-directed. That means that you complete assignments on your schedule throughout the week. All assignments have to be completed by the instructor’s deadline, and it is up to you to keep up with the coursework and get assignments turned in on time. However, this also means that you can learn at the pace that works best for you, as long as it is in the timeframe of the instructor.
Are you able to set aside time each week to complete your online degree coursework?
Online courses are neither easier nor more difficult than traditional courses. They require at least as much commitment, and finishing assignments and communicating with other students and instructors can take several hours per week, just like in a traditional classroom. Before you decide to start with online learning at Virginia College, make sure you have the time to spend to focus on your coursework. That will ensure that you get the most from your investment of time and money.
Do you have good communication and writing skills?
Since all communication in an online college course is in written form, it's very important that you feel comfortable getting online and expressing your thoughts using the written word. Make sure you have a good sense of where your current skills are in terms of writing and communication. You don't have to know how to type, just know how to get your message across by writing. In addition, you have to be willing to share any problems you’re having with the course with your instructor or with the online support staff at Virginia College. No one will know if you look confused. You have to tell someone!
Are you comfortable with computers?
Your computer will be the classroom with your online courses. While you don’t have to be a computer expert to succeed, you will have to know how to get online and access your class. More importantly you will have to have a computer that you can access easily and regularly. Don’t depend on the computer at the library if at all possible
These are just a few of the areas you should consider when thinking of attending online classes at Virginia College or any online school.
